Session 9
The Lost Mines of Phandelver
Dean (Jared), Matt (Spinter Paw), Mariel (Ragash), Chris (Creeper), and James (Kraygen) are returning cast members.
We left the group having forced the Redbrands out of Phandalin. They reunited with Ford, who had escorted the prisoners from the Redbrand’s hideout back home. He informed them that there was still a strange tentacle monster underneath the hideout, eating the remains they had found. The party returned long enough to slay the creature and recover the carpenter’s body.
After some discussion with Sister Garaele, they left the body with her for funeral services and collected a necklace to use as a gift for the ghost she had sought to question. The banshee’s lair lies to the north along Triboar trail, to a ruined town named Conyberry, and from there slightly northwest into Neverwinter Wood. Creeper found her lair easily enough, a small forest dwelling in the manner of the elvish people. The air chilled as he entered, and a ghostly form appeared.
A short conversation later, the group presented her with the necklace from Sister Garaele, and obtained her answer regarding the location of Bowgentle’s spellbook. She said she had traded the book to a necromancer named Tsernoth from the city of Iriaebor over a century ago, and has not seen it since. She allowed the group to depart in peace after that.
Rather than returning to Phandalin, the group explored to the east. They had two objectives in mind. First, the townmaster in Phandalin had reported orcs raiding the area from an unknown location near Old Owl Well. Secondly, Daran Eldernath in Phandalin had reported rumors of undead near Old Owl Well itself.
The party found Old Owl Well first. The ruined watchtower had a rather fancy tent set up inside. Within was a red-robed wizard named Kost, whose forehead bore a tattoo. He greeted the party and welcomed them in for simple refreshments and conversation. He mentioned an orc problem to the south, and suggested that if they could eliminate that problem for him, he would be grateful. The party admitted they were already heading in that direction. As they left, Ford mentioned to the others that the tattoo on Kost’s forehead was the symbol of the necromantic school of magic. Kyros had noticed a strong stench emanating from the ruined tower at Old Owl Well, and sensed via his connection to his god that there were undead there.
Traveling southward, Creeper located a lone orc standing watch outside a cave. His arrows slew the creature from ambush, and the rest of the party set up outside the cave entrance. Splinter Paw imitated an orc’s voice and lured out another, who exploded from arrows, swords, and magic as soon as he poked his nose outside. This alerted the rest of the orcs, who set up inside the cave.
The party cast a Fog Cloud spell that obscured the center of the cave before charging in, defeating the orcs in short order. However, they had an ogre who lasted longer. In fact the ogre fought fiercely… until Splinter Paw called him ugly. His last words were “Awwwwww kitty doesn’t like me.”
